Hello,
I would like to see if anyone knows a cheap way to call to Russia from USA.I just arrived in California and I would like to call my mother in Moscow.AT&T and Sprint have some crazy prices and I can't even afford to pay the big bills that they send me since I am a student.
Do you know a service that can help me call back (but with a decent rate)?
Thanks |

if you call lots, try www.primus.com and get the unlimited VOIP package. Else buy calling cards like they have on this site.
BTW VoIP is sounds like a local call. It even rings like regular local phone. |

| WDT (World Discount Telecommunications) customer service available 7 days a week at (847) 518-0200 or toll free at 1-888-353-0808. It cost me 4.5 cents a minute to call St.Pete from Texas, but I think it is a little more to call Moscow. |

If you don't have a long distance account with a company, probably calling cards are the best way. I have AT&T at home at pay $.04 per minute.
Many of the calling cards have good rates but you have to watch out for surcharges and/or monthly fees. I have always found that the best place to buy calling cards with good rates and low fees is gas stations or convenience stores that are in areas where many foreignors live. They tend to know which cards are the best and have no fees. |

I have been regularly calling my daughter in Siberia using calling cards that we purchase at the Russian Market in Austin or Houston. I'm sure there are some similar markets in CA. They have different names (companies) like Euromama, Tsar something, etc. A $5 card lets you talk about 2 hours. Not bad for calling halfway around the world. DennisF |

got into usa few months back and now settled down
I applied for credit cards so now can buy things online. i have been using http://www.lotsofminutes.com to call Moscow for 3.5 cents and also got around $7.25 free credit with no referral to anyone. quality , connection is excellent. no other charges like maint. or connection fee. i check my online statement and there is no extra fee.

Download Skype at www.skype.com
You can call Moscow for 2 cents per minute with no hidden fees. All you need is a microphone and headset for your PC. I use it all the time to call my lady in St Petersburg. Paid 10 euro for 590 minutes. |

Dear Digitalwolf,
yes, I know a absolutely great way to call your mother nearly for free:
If you have a computer connected to the internet in the US, you should really download the skype-programme to your computer at http://www.skype.com
If your mother happens to have a computer with internet in Russia, it would be the cheapest way to call each other because then you both would phone over the skype connection.
If she continues to have a normal fix phone only, you could still call her using skype. But you would have to buy "bonuses" with skype for being able to phone to a fix phone. Phoning like this is still much cheaper than using any normal phone in the US.
On the skype-forums you get by the way every necessary technical support that you may need. It is easy, good fun and really for FREE, most of the time.
Best,

Other advantages about Skype is that it does not matter what country you are dialling from the rate remains the same. You could be dialling from some obscure place and it will still cost the same. I used it when I was in Russia to ring my firends in Australia and New Zealand. Cost me 2 cents a minute from Russia. Heres a real good one for you as well. Say your friend in Russia only has a mobile phone. How much do you think an international call to them will cost? You will be surprised to learn that it costs just 7c a minute to dial a mobile in Russia. It costs me twice that to ring my friend down the road on his mobile. Heres a listing of the rates in USD and note, these rates apply from ANY country in the world.

If you want to use broadband Internet to make your calls, check out http://www.telphin.com. They are a Russian company so they have good interconnects throughout Russia. Another advantage of using Telphin is that you can get a Russian virtual number in St. Petersburg. That way people in Russia can make an inter-city call to Petersburg and your phone will ring in the USA.
When I call Russia from the UK, I use http://www.telediscount.co.uk. You just dial the right access number, one for landlines and one for mobile, then dial the normal Russia phone number, i.e. 007 095 xxx xxxx |
