Most of the hotels appear to be in the city center or northern part of the city. Questions,

1. Is the northern part of the city better than the southern part for peronal safety, quality, metro/bus/rail transportation convenience.

I know In London, north of the Thames River was considered better than the south. There used to be only one metro line which went south of the river!

2. How safe is it to travel on Metro late at night?

3. Outside the city center, how safe is it to walk the streets late at night. For example, is it safe walking at 12:30 am from the metro station to the hotel which is 5-15 minutes away?

4. What is the difference between a single and a double room. Does the single room have bed that is wide enough to sleep one (twin-bed in US, single bed in UK). Double in UK means the bed sleeps two, double in US means the room has two beds! There are no "sleep one" beds in the US hotels!

5. Hotel location: for a tourist, how far from the city center is too far - 3, 5, ... 10 metro stops?
For example, in Boston which is a very compact city, staying near the last train metro station is not very far - 20 mins max to the city center if no line changing is involved. Not so in London!

Thanks for your help.

From a tourist's point of view, there is definitely more going on in the northern part of the city. Your mileage may vary.

The metro is very safe if one is sensible. The rest depends on the specifics. I was never concerned getting from the Partazanskaya metro station to the Izmailoskiy Hotels or from Prespekt Mira to nearby hotels and restaurants at any time of night.

I think for most Russian hotels, 'double' means two single beds, but I don't think this is universal. When it matters, I always read the booking sites very carefully and ask questions when it is not clear.

Any hotel that meets your needs and is close to the metro is fine for getting into the city in my opinion, no matter how many stops. However, I don't think I have ever stayed more than 5 stops out. I have usually gone in the winter, and shortening the walk to the metro is as least as important as how long the ride is.
