Hi, does anyone have experience getting a business visa from the Russian embassy in Ottawa? I'm interested in getting a business visa and would like to see if anyone else has gone this route in Canada.

I'm going to visit family and don't want the hassle of getting a private visa and it sounds like a tourist visa is going to be problematic because I won't be staying in a hotel. Is a business visa (even though I'm not travelling on business) the best option?

Tourist Visa is probably the easest and cheapest way. I am doing a Business Visa, because I probably go many times and I might change my dates.

I have obtained a business visa from the Russian embassy in Ottawa. If you have all of your documents in order, there should be no trouble. Visa information can be found here:

A business visa is a good choice for multiple entry over several months (1 year maximum). If you plan to go for a trip with only single entry, and duration under 30 days, then the tourist visa is easier and more economical.

Will the embassy in ottawa accept a telex as a valid document or will I have to get the original invitation sent to them? How about a faxed copy?

Thanks

Business invitation has to be an original document, but tourist can be a fax or PDF scanned doc.

This is a wierd question about Telex.

Invitations can only be issued by Russian organizations that are registered with the government to issue invitations. Normally these organizations send the invitation directly to the embassy who will issue the visa. You never see it.

This thing called an "invitation" has nothing whatsoever to do with the people or companies that you are visiting. The invitation is arranged by your visa support agency as part of the process of appying for a visa. When you (or your travel agency) submit your visa application to the embassy, they match it up with the invitation in order to process your visa.
