I think it's 1 liter for ilquors and 3 liters for wine beer etc.
I would say don't bring canned food into the US, although the people at the security check wouldn't care, so you would be able to get out of the airport with it, unless you're unlucky.
Also, if you want to bring more than 1 liter of strong alcohol, you could put one liter in your luggage and buy 1 liter at the duty-free (then put it in a bag and buy one more liter on the on-board duty-free...).
Of course, it's just theoretical, and you should abide by the law...

From: http://www.gonorthwest.com/Visitor/planning/border/border.htm

This info...

Going through U.S. Customs
Visitors who are at least 21 years of age may bring the following into the USA: 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 2 kilograms (4.4 lbs.) of tobacco; 1 liter of alcohol; gifts to the value of $100. Different restrictions will apply to returning US residents and citizens.

Do a Google search and find the same info Wink

REMEMBER 1 liter is ONE LITER - no matter where you buy it and where you pack it Wink So beware of the advice you get about stashing bottles in baggage and buying "extra" in duty free.....

When I reenter the US from FSU, I always have some small food items (candy or the like). Even "canned" (in jars) produce from a garden. It seems to me that when they ask you to list food on the customs form, they are only looking for "fresh" fruits or vegetables that could be carrying insects, larvae, or bacteria that could cause problems in the U.S.

Any other kinds of food don't seem to be a problem.
