Hi!
I am a russian sitizen and I have a Green Card, so I don't need a visa, but I have a 9 month old baby who was born here in US - so he is an american sitizen. I am planning to visit my family in Moscow and want to stay for 2 month, so can you tell me what kind of visa does my son need?
Thanks |

1 Your little bundle of joy needs an american passport.
2 Then you can get a Russian visa (tourist) inside it.
3 My spouse, a Russian lady, got our son his russian citizenship through the London Embassy (we live in the UK) and we then got him a Russian "Foreign" Passport. You will save a bundle on visa fees. DOn't worry about military service (if its a boy). Provided he doesn't have at that time a russian propiska and is registered as living abroad through a russian embassy then he will avoid military service (if it exists in 18 years). I can't say I know the rules about dual citizenship for americans and russians - maybe not the same as the UK but strive to achieve what I did and you'll save time and money.

Tourists visas are limited to one month.
The 2-month stay you are planning could be managed with a private visa, see http://www.waytorussia.net/RussianVisa/Types.html .
Unfortunately, this site advises, "This is the worst kind of visa you can apply for." There is much bureaucracy, and the process takes many weeks.
Accordingly, it would probably be much better if you can obtain the Russian "foreign" passport as Dittrich advises, or in the alternative, shorten the trip to one month. |

I have used private invitations and visas in the past but moved over to tourist visas many years ago to avoid giving my mother-in-law the hassle of queueing in moscow. The private visa invitation is a real pain in the ass to get and then the original must be sent to you so you can apply for a private visa. The simplest thing is to go for a month on a tourist visa rather than paying for a longer business visa.

julily,
Dittrich mentioned the "longer business visa."
If you weren't a Russian citizen, you could apply for a 3-month or longer business visa, and either include your baby (if you had a passport including you and the baby), or get a matching business visa for the baby.
But because you ARE a Russian citizen, these possibilities are not open. I am guessing that maybe a child can not get a business visa without a matching visa for the parent, but in your situation, I would contact a Russian consulate in the U.S. and ask what they advise for the travel you want to make.
I have read on another site ( http://www.realrussia.co.uk/faq2.asp ), "The Russian consulate state that 'If one of the parents is a Russian citizen and the child is travelling to Russia with that parent, you will need to get a Russian passport or a private visa for the child. A Tourist visa will not be appropriate'. However, please note that we provide tourist visas for children travelling with their parents every day, including the children of Russian citizens, who only have a UK passport or who have dual nationality." Please remember that Russian consulates have different rules, so things may work differently between the U.K. and U.S.
Unfortunately, you simply want to visit your parents, but the visa situation is not simple at all. Это - Россия, что мы можем делать?
Всего доброго! |
