Last week I appled for the invitiation letter for the visa for our two day stop over in St. Petersburg during our Baltic cruise, and got the following in reply: Quote: If a cruise passenger does not wish to be with the group and prefers making an individual city tour, just having a tourist visa is not sufficient. In order to leave the port, you also need a so-called "port permission" issued by the company that provided visa support or by their authorized partners. It is not possible for a ship passenger just to show his passport and visa to the passport control officers and go to the city at random. You have to be escorted. Now, this is a complete and total surprise as I haven't seen reference to this requirement on any website or in the experiences of other people I've spoken to. Any light anyone can shed on this would be gratefully appreciated!
