Sorry if this has been dealt with but I couldnt find the answer in the search!

Im travelling from Tallinn to St Petersburg then onto Moscow.

Im only staying in St. P for 60 hours (2 nights accommodation) before getting the train to Moscow. However including travel from Tallinn to St. P then the train from St P. to Moscow I would've been in Russia for 3.5 days - over the 72 hour limit for registration.

Do I need to register my visa in St petersburg and in Moscow if that is the case? I've read you dont need to register if you will be in a city less than 72 hours but will I be considered over this?

Thanks

By law, you wouldn't need to register.

An experienced traveler on this forum usually recommends to register anyway (because the people in uniforms sometimes hassle you, even if you obey the rules), just to be on the safe side. If your 2 nights in St. P. will be at a hotel, the hotel can register you.

BTW, the rule is 3 business days, so the dates of your travel make a difference. If your time in Russia includes a Sunday, then you're under the 3-day limit in any case (Saturday doesn't usually count as a business day, but last year the offices were opened on Saturdays during summer, so it DID count).

If you decide not to register, just keep a copy of your train ticket (this may take a little advance planning, depending on how you buy it) - if you are challenged about not being registered, you can document that you didn't spend 3 days in any city (if I were in your situation, and not staying at a hotel, this is what I would do).

P.S. In another thread, you asked about entering by bus vs. train. I read 2-3 years ago that there can be very long customs & immigration delays (up to 8 hours) when entering Russia by road. I don't know if this applies in 2009 to your proposed bus route, but I would definitely check this out before planning to arrive by bus.

P.P.S. If this will be your first visit to Russia, I hope that your short time there will inspire you to return for a much longer visit!
