The fact is that by sayibg "ni puha ni pera" you actually wish a person to get nothing "no fluff, no feathers" (literal translation) and so if someone replyes "thank you" this really means he will not get anything. So the answer is "go to hell (with your prophets)".
It's a wish of a good luck but in the form of "protection from bad eye" (чтоб не сглазить).

some more ideoms:

как об стенку горох - (kak ob stenku goroh; literaly: like throwing pea on the wall) meaning: to do something without any results

что в лоб, что по лбу - (chto v lob chto po lbu; literaly: to forehead or onto forehead is the same) meaning: no understanding of something.
Example: я ему 3 часа говорю, а ему что в лоб, что по лбу - I am explaining him for 3 hours, but with no understanding from his side.

дуракам закон не писан - (durakam zakon ne pisan; literaly: there is no law for stupid people) meaning: to do something what usually people would not do considering it as something strange, dangerous or stupid.
Something like english 'fools rush in where angels fear to tread'.

от греха подальше - (ot greha podal'she, literaly: to be far away from a sin) meaning: for a sake of safety, for any bad case.
Example: пойду-ка я отсюда от греха подальше - I better go out from here, for a sake of my safety.

Russian language is rish of ideoms, actually.
And one shouldn't mix up commonly used ideoms with a sleng of youth.

Аршином общим не измерить,
У ней особенная стать -
В Россию можно только верить.

Кстати вот вам и идиома:

Ахтунг (achtung, German: literally "attention"). Achtung, faggots are near or Achtung, faggots are amongst us.

In a close company suggests that someone of people in that company does something wrong secretely of others.

Ага, привет башоргу Smile)

"Заставь дурака богу молиться, он себе лоб расшибёт" - make a fool pray and he'll brake his forehead.
Meaning - more zeal than sense. In other words it's about someone stupid but diligent.

"Глаз на жопу натяну и моргать заставлю!!" - I'll draw your eye onto your ass and make you blink with it!!!
Meaning - just a threat to kick ass Smile

"Ни туда, ни сюда" - [going] neither here nor here
Meaning - something/someone useless or disappointing (depends on context)
