Stay away from Moscow. Instead, go to Volgograd and start by taking Russian lessons at a language school there. Find a girlfriend and she will help you find the best places to shop and help you with earning money. Russians are expert at earning money without having a formal job.

In Volgograd you will avoid all the problems of inflated Moscow prices.

Instead of a visit, you could also just plan a short-term stay (few weeks maybe) there with no strings attached. That way if you decide that living in Russia is not for you, just pack your bags and go home. Well that's provided you don't plan to bring all your things if you decided to settle down! Smile
once again your wisdom has shone thru in a sea of uncertainty.

Hello,
I'm actually in Russia at the moment, and I am planning on stealing your thunder Brandal.

I met a girl on the internet 4 years ago. Great girl, been here for 10 days, and I am planning on moving here as I have been made redundant in the UK, and with the ressession and all, well, think i'll be just as well off here as there! (I was also in sales by the way).

As for Russia, I'm in St Petes, and believe me, Cindy is absolutely right....St Petes is massively over priced! As I have had the luxury of staying with a local, I like to think I know what it is like to be a resident here. One thing I will say, is it is a completely different life to the UK, from the traffic, to the nationals personalities.

Whilst the cities sites of interest are amazing, I will admit, if it was not for personal reasons already mentioned, a LONG holiday here would be more than enough.

Anyway, back to your original points.... The 1 bedroom appt im in at the moment costs her 500 pounds a month (about the same as UK prices ie. HIGH). As for going out, yeah....got to do that, an awesome place with brilliant bars, and constantly growing, but I would say it is clearly more than $100 dollars a week (please, no offence intended, just a difference of opinion), I've been out several nights (admittedly, I am English, so drink alot!) I reckon it works out at about 4000 rubles a night, ie. around 80 pound (i'll let you do the English to American mathes).

As for the architecture, BEAUTIFUL!

Anyway, as I said...stealing the thunder....Anyone no the visa rules for working and living in Russia...also, the taxes..do they need to be payed in both countries???

Cheers All!

@Griffiths:

Guess you've learned to check the post dates Wink You're lucky the previous poster still checks in.

As far as I know, it's pretty difficult for a foreigner to stay long in Russia. Probably your only realistic route is to marry a citizen, but even then the paperwork is probably a big deal.

It has often been mentioned that in theory, one can stay ALMOST continuously by getting a series of 90-day business visas, though I haven't heard from anyone who actually does this. It is necessary to leave Russia (generally, to return to your home country) every 90 days, to take at least a few days to get the next visa: visas cannot be obtained while you are in Russia.

Cheers!

What makes up your mind to move to russia?? Perhaps, you don't like your place anymore..lol..But anyway, i think the best thing you can do first is find a job, u know without this its really hard for you to take care evrything unless your rich. And after that i think that's the right time to hanging out...
