My girlfriend is supposed to be coming to the US this summer. When she was here a year ago, she got a $60 ticket from the cops for trying to pass through the subway terminal without paying. She ended up leaving the country without paying the ticket. Now we want to know if this outstanding ticket will keep her from being able to ever enter the US again? If so, is there anything we can do about it? Can she mail them the payment? Or can i pay the ticket for her? What effect does this have on the visa process?

Any helpful information would be GREATLY appreciated.

'ya know, it really depends. some jurisdictions won't file any type of criminal charges unless/until there are a handful of tickets. she's probably just fine and I would be surprised if a single ticket would be entered into any system that might be included in a criminal background check. not even sure if the American's do a criminal background check on visa applicants.

and anybody "official" that you might ask is gonna tell you to pay the ticket.

crapshoot, I guess.

If I were you I'd keep a lot of extra cash on hand. If you were "caught" you could "in theory" be arrested and serve minor jail time. This is more common with speeding tickets. I'd bring enough money to be ready to pay the ticket plus interest + bail just in case.

I'm pretty sure a speeding ticket would be listed and if a police officer checked your name they would see it. That can get people flagged at the border.

Like danbrew said if you asked anyone official they would say to pay the ticket. Was this "city/state police?" or transit cops/police that gave you the ticket? If they were transit cops you're less likely to have it listed on any records. However if you did choose to pay you could simply look up "x city transit" of whatever city you were in and track down a contact who could tell you where and how to pay the fine and what payment methods they accept.

best of luck
