Hello everyone... Wanna say thank you to waytoRussia for my tourist visa invite for this past February. I had an awesome time! Everything worked out great. Thanks to everyone here for answering my questions, but, I have a few more... Smile

I plan to go back to Russia this summer, and this time I want go with a private invite from my girl. My question is, to anyone who has done this, do you need to bring the original papers to the consulate? Or can I use faxed/emailed copies from her? This is for a private/homestay visa I guess it's called. I will be using the NYC Consulate. I am going for less than a month... so I could use another tourist visa I think, is there a limit on the amount of tourist visa's you can get?

One other question.. I wanted to know what I need to do to be able to drive my girl's car in Russia. I have a NY state license. I read that you need to have a translated copy of your license or something? Anyone know about this?

According to WayToRussia's own page (http://www.waytorussia.net/RussianVisa/Types.html),

Quote:
Personal (Private) Visa:

This type of visa is given to the foreiners who come to Russia for a personal visit (friends, relatives etc.) It can be valid for up to 3 months and is single entry only. This is the worst kind of visa you can apply for.

Based on what the site says about this, you will probably be much happier using a tourist visa. I have not heard of any limit on the number of such visas: you can apply for one every month, if you want! Anyway, I've gotten 6 so far.

I have not driven in Russia, but I believe it is sufficient to bring your New York license and an International Driving Permit (which includes Russian among its various languages). I was able to get an IDP at my local AAA travel office for less than $20.

Thanks romdur. Much appreciated.

Yea, I was thinking another tourist visa would be much easier and quicker. I know a personal invite takes some time, and it might be too much time.

International driving permit, $20... that's cool with me.

In addition to an international driver's license, I know my husband (who is Russian) had to obtain special permission to drive his father's car while in Russia. I'm not exactly sure where he got this, but my husband stated you have to have it in your insurance as well as a letter from the owner giving you permission to drive their car. One time he failed to do this and they were fined by the police.
