Hi,
my name's Giovanni, 2 years ago I used this excellent website to organize my transiberian trip from Moscow to Beijing, but this year with my wife we were thinking of taking it a step further, and we were looking into the possibility of going to alaska leaving from russia and crossing the Bering strait on a fishing boat or ice breaker. does anyone know if that's possible? how easy would it be to organize? is there ship or ferry that does it regularly? do you think it would be feasible or it's just a dream?

I have been checking cruise ships , "scientific" cruises and charters, and all I've been able to contact and talk with from someone have told me that a partial "cruise", is not possible -- their rules prohibit it , (I suspect lost revenue has more to do with it. ) and that storage space is at a premium and a vehicle could not be carried aboard.
For just getting to Provideniya or Anadyr without a vehicle -- Bering Air flies there, but getting a vehicle to, or from there to the states (Nome or Anchorage) -- thats the problem. Plus when you figure a proposed trip starting in Provideniya -- (spring -early summmer) and having time to get through an area without roads of any substance will take quite a while -- the rivers will be building from melt off, the ground will be mush in the lowland areas, self sufficiency a must and pray to God there is no medical emergencies. Starting in Provideniya will "start the 90 day clock visa thing" (from what I have been able to research about travel in Chukotka) At this time I'm at a loss at finding transportation from Alaska to Provideniya -- but I'm not going to stop chasing leads I'll just come at it from a different angle. Our trip is still 3 years out -- hopefully

At the moment your plan is a day dream.
Vehicle travel from the far east is only really practical from 3 entry points:-

1 Magadan 4wd late summer
2 Vanino 4wd early to late summer
3 Vladivostock all year round

The Magadan route via Yakutsk suffers from rivers that need to be crossed and if the water level is high then even a russian truck would have trouble.
The Vanino route suffers from a crap road (may have been improved since a year or tow ago. I read about some trip on the internet by amercians riding bmw motorcycles.
The Vladivostock route is dependable and used all year round by even 2wd cars

As always it helps to speak directly to someone who has done your route beforehand.
