I have a question. You know how movies can travel badly.Good translators can keep the sense of movies and books but almost always something is lost in translation.

Is there anyone in the whole of Russia who "understood' the 1994 movie "Pulp Fiction" ? Not a single Austrian, Pole or Russian I ever met "got it", let alone liked it.In fact, they seemed greatly suprised when informed "Pulp Fiction" is a comedy.

All my friends loved it! So did I. It started a Tarantino craze amongst teenagers. I bought the soundtrack.

Great movie!

Tarantino's best movie, by far, was his first one, Reservoir Dogs. Highly recommended Twisted Evil

Pulp fiction is one of the most popular answers that people name when they are asked about their favorite movies.

I've watched Ночной дозор about three times (I have it on disc and I'm learning Russian), and it's quite an entertaining movie, especially with the heavy special effects. Very strange atmosphere. It's always night and the sky is always dark. I'm curious to know when Дневний дозор comes out.

And did you non-native English speakers understand all of the countless American pop cultural references in "Pulp Fiction"? It has enough to fill a guidebook but did you catch the ones to "Charlie's Angels", "Saturday Night Fever", "Psycho" and "On the Waterfront"?

To tell the truth I've seen lots of american pop cultural "things" to undersrand the humour Smile and if I don't understand some reference for example my friends always can explain to me anything...
And from movies that you've mentioned I've seen only "Charlie's Angels" but in russian translation... anyway it was an extremely nice movie with lots of funny episodes Smile As many of russians know, in most cases russian translators make lots of mistakes cause they can't understand for example what this joke is refering on. Living example is "Shrek" which was less funny because of a terrible translation. So I prefer to watch "ecxellent" with plenty of dificult-to-translate humour movies in original.

Also I advice you to watch english ones - "Lock stock and two smoking barrets" and "Snatch" by Guy Ritchie - those movies are one of my most favourite Smile
And the last movie which I really liked was "Bad Santa". This movie is got damn perfect Smile It has really improved my english!

Suggestion is after hours

There are very few good Dark Comedies.
Bad Santa was hilliarious and National Lampoon Christ Vacation is awesome.
Question, every nation has its spoof stereotype cultural comedy like Russia has Nationslist series, Canada has Strange Beer, what is the USA version. I am thinking it is National Lampoon Vacation series.

The 1970's TV series Charlie's Angels was very funnily parodied in "Pulp Fiction". Remember Uma Thurman speech to John Travolta about the television pilot? Very Happy And the ketchup joke? Very Happy

About the movie "Charlie's Angels" -how I hated that piece of shit .Hated, hated, hated it. One of the worst movies ever made. It's an insult to everyone with near human intelligence.Watching that was like the worst music video you've ever seen over and over and over for 92 minutes.

I can imagine why you liked it though. Rolling Eyes So to give an idea of how terrible it really is, imagine the same exact thing except with oh say, Ewan MacGregor, Luke Wilson and Jude Law digitally inserted into the lead roles.

For all American men [and women] who are so O-B-S-S-E-S-S-E-D and totally C-R-A-Z-Y about Russian Czarist-Communist movies, I would highly recommend watching the infamous film called "THE J.F.K. ASSASSINATION."

The setting was in the 1960s. A former U.S. Marine Corps soldier named Lee Harvey Oswald, an American terrorist, assassinated the last famous U.S. president John F. Kennedy [for his 2nd year term] at Daley Plaza in Dallas, Texas [Now folks, this is very similar to the newly elected U.S. President George W. Bush for 2nd Term].

Now, why did Lee Harvey Oswald shot the U.S. president John F.Kennedy?

Okay, you see folks, Lee Harvey Oswald was sentenced by a court-martial in Texas because first he shot himself with a gun and fought with a U.S.M.C. Sergeant. Also, Lee Harvey Oswald loved the Soviet Union's ideology of Communism. Later on, he was permanently discharged from the United States Marine Corps.

But in 1961, the former-U.S. Marines soldier went to the U.S.S.R. to marry a Soviet-Communist woman named Marina Prusakova. Lee Harvey Oswald married the Communist woman, and a baby boy child was born in the U.S.A...

Finally, Jack Ruby killed Lee Harvey Oswald in front of the American public with his own hand gun pistol for all to see under the New Orleans, Louisianna Jail Basement...

Then, the 1964 Civil Rights African-American Revolution!!! Just watch the "JFK ASSASSINATION", and see for yourself about what U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. [Soviet Russia] back then was all about folks...

But the ending... it ruins the whole thing. Typical Hollywood crowd appeasing trickery. Pathetic!

I saw it again on HBO today. So the movie ends by Chris Kelvin leaving the shuttle and going back onto the space station as it's swallowed by the Planet, then believing he is back on Earth and living his old life. Then Kelvin cuts his finger, it heals and he realizes he's on Solaris, the world around him is a construct of his mind and he can make his wife materialize. So he does and they forgive each other and kiss and music plays...

It was sad and sweet and seemed a natural and believable conclusion. It seemed the right ending that he would choose to remain in a fantasy world with a reconstruction of his dead wife as he remembered her and they would try to live as they did before.
