Traveling from Moscow to Kostroma
From my reading train schedules it looks like 8 hours or more to go a short distance
Has anybody had any experience on car rentals in Russia?
Would be a lot quicker to drive
Any advice is greatly appreciated
Thanks

Moscow - Rostov Velike - around 3 hours by car
Rostov Velike - Yaroslavl - around 45m by car
Yaroslavl - Kostroma - around 1h 15m by car (estimated)
Total travel time around 5 hours.
It also depends on how fast you drive and whether there are traffic jams.
Have you driven in Russia or any similar eastern european country before? if so then yes, you could rent a car for a few days.
Much better than the train for seeing things.
Some rental companies might not want you to take the vehicle out of Moscow city limits or Moskovskaya Oblast. Renting isn't really a developed service in Russia.

| No it's about 6 hours. If you have a licence valid in Russia, don't bother with offers above. But take your own GPS after making sure it knows Russian roads, or make sure in advance the rental agency will have one for you. |

| I don't know of any licence valid in Russia other than a Russian one. You can get an international driving permit (which has a Russian page in it) in your own country and use that in conjunction with your domestic licence. That's the usual practice. |

You must drive slower than I do!
I think alot depends on the time it takes to get out of Moscow and onto the roads. Those times are from memory what it took me this year. I haven't been to Kostroma for more than 10 years but Kostroma isn't that far away from Yaroslavl. I suppose I could reload my russian roads into my satnav and see what it came up with...but as we all know russians don't obey the speed limits unless the cops are about.
But I agree about driving if it can be done. In winter, it would not be wise to drive about unless you're used to driving in snow.
