The Altay tours on this site are already several years old. What is the best way to hike and climb around the Altay? Can one do it as a single walker or must one be in a group? Has anybody hiked in the Altay independently? How was it? Has anybody hiked in the Pamirs or Tian Shen independently and how do they compare?

Hi!
You can travel in Altai Mountains independently without problems. You need only good maps and a permit if you want to hike in area of Belukha, so it is border between Russia and Kazakhstan.
I'd recommend you to travel in Kazakhstan part of Altai Mountains, so thre is not so many tourists as in Russian part, and, accordingly nature is more wild.
Tien-Shan - you can travel independently in environs of Alma-Ata or in the area of Issyk-Kul Lake. Another destination - Ala-archa near Bishkek, but nowadays the situation in Kirgizia is not for travellers.
About Pamir: Northwestern Pamir is safe enough. South Pamir is the really dangerous territory for travelling independently.
For hiking in Asia I'd recommend you a week hiking near the town of Fergana. August is the best time for hiking.
If you have any questions, please write me.

Best regards

I was hiking summer 2008 to the Multan lakes and Kuiguk river. The organizer was Altai tours, but I notice their netpage is outdated. We were on the eclipse tour.
I wrote about our experiences here in the forum in 2008.

Unless you are used to carry 25+ kg on your back you better get horses to carry the equipment.

I've seen ads about hiking the Altai, just google for it.

It is worth while to visit the altai region. Enjoy!

If this will be your first trip, you'd better get a tour from a tour agency. Every place has it's own features, which you have to know and understand to avoid incomprehensions and troubles. There are plenty of agencies with reasonable prices

Hello friends...

Hiking in Altai Mountains is not so easy as one thoughts....It is very difficult to hike it independently....I too tried to hike it alone but fail to so so....If you are in a group of three to five only then you can hike it easily....This is my personal experinece.....
