Hi Gorteen,
does not matter what kind of Russian visa you have. Please be informed that if you plan to register your marriage with Russian state bodies you should apply for the marriage one month in advance. In this point of view Russian business visa is preferable because Russian tourist visa is issued for 30 days only.

Hi Gorteen,

Look at Visalink trying to spam people with their useless stuff... anyways... you can find a full advice on marriage in Russia on http://waytorussia.net/Practicalities/Marriage.html

Regarding the visa – you can have any type of visa, for example, when I married, my wife was from UK and she came to Russia on business visa. The main problem is that you have to wait 30 days before your appointment, so unless you are planning to leave Russia in between it's better to get a long-term business visa (like a 3-month one, for example).

Also note that wedding dates are often fully booked on warmer months and you may have to wait longer than 30 days to find available spot. If you don't plan to go back between applying for marriage and wedding, you probably should get a business visa to allow yourself a bit more flexibility on wedding date.

Another thing is, your girlfriend can submit marriage application as long as there is a letter of consent from you to book wedding date. So if you can manage to book wedding date before you leave and know when you are getting married, you can even go on tourist visa and that's ok.

But please note that if you plan to go on honeymoon right after to somewhere outside of Russia, you won't be able to return without another visa. If you plan on dong that, then, multi-entry business visa might be more convenient.

Last year I was informed that marriage on a business visa was definitely not possible. Worth checking everything with your local Zags.

Important caution from petersblurb, about not being able to marry on a business visa. I wonder if anyone else can confirm this?

If it IS a problem to marry on a business visa (and it is quite logical, if such is forbidden), then perhaps a homestay (private) visa will be the thing. These can last up to 90 days, and so can accommodate the 30-day advance needed for the marriage license.

We were told it didn't matter. But it's Russia. Better to ask the one who process your papers. We got married in SPB by the way.

30-day tourist visas.......Now, how did the Russian government figure this was a useful document to spend a "great deal" of time touring Russia? Smile

Obviously, the country is not gigantic enough to warrant issuing of 3-month tourist visas, like some smaller countries do.

Oh, this is a marriage thread! Oops! Good luck with it all.
