I know it's early, but I would like to go to Sochi for the 2014 olympics, can anyone recommend a place to stay nearby? Any hotels?

As it happens, just a few hours ago I heard a radio report (NPR in the US) on this very subject. They interviewed a travel agent (I didn't get where he is based) who specializes in tourism in Russia. He said that the moment the games ended in Canada, he was deluged with calls and emails requesting bookings in Sochi for the next winter games!

He said that Russia will spend about $20 billion on construction to prepare for the games. The hotel accommodations in Sochi are not adequate, and 10,000 additional rooms are planned. He believes that many of the existing hotel rooms are of rather poor quality, whereas the normal standard for Olympic games guests is high.

He said that he plans to travel to Sochi during the summer, to survey the hotel situation there. He is asking his customers to wait until the status of hotels in 2014 becomes more clear.

I don't know if this helps any, but perhaps it will take some time, before you can get good information.

I actually just read something about that on wikipedia, but thanks for the response. I would also like to visit St. Petersburg in the next few years, can anyone recommend somewhere to stay in the area for about a week?

There are many hotels in St Petersburg. Please mention whether you want a luxury accommodation or a budget one for your stay. This will be helpful in recommending you the right hotel.
