Since there is no more dual citizenship, and as far as I know they don't have a contract do I need to get a visa now or what? And if I can renew it how to go about the fastest way? thanx, Yana.

I believe the opposite is true. You can certainly renew your Russian passport regarless of how many other nationalities you have. Russia will always consider you a Russian living abroad, whereas US will consider you an American.

In fact, from what I remember, Russian citizens are required to enter on a valid Russian passport. If you attempt to apply for a Russian visa, I'm pretty sure the consulate/embassy will ask you to provide proof that you have renounced your Russian citizenship. Actually a similar rule is in effect for all American citizens who are required to enter the US by using their American passports, otherwise they are acting illegal.

But obviously I suggest you check all this with the Russian embassy in the US instead of relying on the opinion of some unknown friends from the Internet.

This problem has come up before. You will get different advice here. But it is correct that you re required to renew your Russian passport and travel to Russia on that. Then when you re-enter the US, you show your valid US passport. I did this recently for my son who we adopted 7 years ago, and his Russian passport had expired. We attempted at first to just apply for visa for him since he is US citizen, but they would not grant him visa since he is considered by Russia as Russian citizen. There are regional Russian Embassy offices and you need to call them and find out if you can renew by mail or in person. We had a time crunch so we ended up going in person with our son to the NYC Russian Embassy. I have been told by the Washington DC Embassy however that for a fee ofcourse, their embassy can issue a fast renewal passport and they don't require a personal visit. But you know how all beaurocracies operate and s Smile ometimes it is difficult to get to the right person. Be persistent. Good luck!

maxca is correct in here.

You'll always be considered Russian by the RF authorities, and American by the US authorities.

to renew your passport, visit your enarest Russian Embassy/Consulate.
