Hi , I have a question about travel to Russia for dual nationalities > My son is 17 , but will be 18 in August . He has Russian and UK passport and we planning to travel to Russia for 2 weeks in June , using Russian passport. However he has my maiden name in his Russina passport and my married name in his UK passport + paper form UK confirming the name change. The quesions I have :
1) entering Russia by Russina passport being very close to 18 ( but not yet 18 ) is there any risk of military service ?
2) Leaving Russia with British passport on the different name but having paper from UK confirming the name change
3) We also obtained a Russian visa in his British passport , but then found out that you must enter in Russian passport , being RU citizen - is there issue having Russian visa in his English passport , but not using it ?
Thank you |

Marina,
Unfortunately, I don't know about the military service question. Hopefully, someone who does know will soon post an answer.
In general, Russian Federation officials will have no interest in the UK passport of a Russian citizen. They won't ask to see the UK passport, and don't care whether he has one! So the question of how his name is spelled in the UK passport, and any visas it may have -- will not matter to Russian migration officials.
What they MIGHT be concerned about, is a minor leaving the country. Most countries (including the Russian Federation) have rules concerning the travel of minors, to protect against improper adoptions, one parent taking a child out of the country without the other parent's consent, and so on. Unfortunately, I don't know what these rules are for Russia... It is POSSIBLE, that when you leave Russia, you might be required to show various documents concerning your family relationship, and even the status of his father. For this purpose, your change of name might be important. I wish I knew more; the UK government advises contacting the Russian Embassy in London for more information.
Another possible complication: probably, you bought the ticket for him using his new name (your married familiya). When you are leaving for Russia, the airline will want to see that he has legal permission to enter Russia. Of course, his real legal permission is his Russian passport, but the name will be different from the name on the ticket. But if instead, you show them his UK passport with the unusable visa, this will satisfy them, and the names will agree
And of course, when you fly back to the UK, the airline will need to see his UK passport at check in. |
