Hello! So I need advice. I want to visit St. Petersburg in the fall for about a week (tourist visa). I'm currently living in San Francisco, and I'm leaving August 19th to move to Rome, Italy, where I'll be living for 9 months on a student visa. I've been doing some research, and I feel like one of you helpful folks might be able to help me out. Here's the thing...

My Italian student visa will be ready on August 16th, and I'll pick it up in person that day at the SF consulate. That gives me about 3 days to get a Russian tourist visa, ha. Is this realistic at all?

Alternatively, any idea if I'll be able to get a Russian tourist visa while in Rome, or will they just make me send my documents back to a consulate in the US?

Thanks!

It might be possible to get a tourist visa in 3 days, but probably not practical. Fortunately this should not be necessary.

And by the way, no one would ask you to send your documents from Italy back to America ... with the exception of foreign ministry couriers carrying blank passports, passports are supposed to cross international frontiers with the people to whom they were issued!

Russian consulates seem to follow the principle, that citizens of third countries are allowed to apply for visas, but usually ONLY if they can prove their permission to stay in the consulate's country for 91 days or more. Your student visa is exactly this kind of proof, so I expect that you can get your visa in Italy.

I suggest visiting consular office of the Russian embassy in Rome a month or so before your planned visit. As you may already know, you will need an invitation to get a tourist visa -- you can learn more about this on waytorussia. If you aren't fluent in either Italian or Russian, you may find it helpful to find someone who can interpret for you when you visit the embassy.
