Was my first enter to Russia: A travel company arranged the invitation and voucher. I had not booked any hotel ( was staying at private address). The travel company will book a "temporary" confirmation at a hotel. Name of hotel is stated on the invitation. On the immigration card under "name of host", then just write this hotel thats on your invitation. You do not need to live at this hotel thats stated on immigration card. It can also be useful to apply for two extra days ( then you have a buffer if something happens, like loosing passport). When filling out the immigration card, remember to write the exact same dates thats on your invitation. It doesnt matter if you are leaving more early. When doing registration, just remember to make registration for the whole period (enter date-actual leaving date). If you live at a hotel, they will arrange the registration (doesnt matter if the hotel is not the same as on your invitation). Ask for receipt and everything is now OK. Registration usually cost between RUR 800-1500. Registration procedure takes 5min. They ask for which period you want to register and they will take a photocopy of your visa and passport. You will then get your passport back. After some hours you can collect the registration receipt ( can take one day, depends on if your at the office early or late). If you have a private invitation from a friend, then registration must be done within 72hours. If you are staying with tourist visa ( hotel, hostel, private apartment without private invitation) then you must register within one working day. This is also stated on the immigration card. Its very easy and there are too much complicated writing about registration. Hope this could be useful info.
