Hi I'm doing the trans siberian from beijing to moscow and then about 2 weeks in moscow. Ill be traveling through siberia in late november and early december. Im wondering what kind of coat to bring. I currently own two coats. A black naval peacoat and a black marmot rain shell. The rain shell is more practical its warmer lighter drier and easier to clean. But Im worried that particularly for my time in moscow it will be too informal.(i also think wearing outdoor clothes in cities is really dorky) can anyone give me advice on which is better to bring.

For the Trans Sib in winter, neither one nor a combination of your coats will suffice.

For Russian winter you must have a long length coat.

It may be of of a thick woolen fabric, some kind of stuffed insulated parka material, or fur. It should come down to at least the knee.

The Russian cold is not only the air, but it rises up from the frozen ground, the ice and snow you are standing on to freeze you from the bottom up.

A long coat will be a necessity. Traveling Russia in winter is an expensive proposition for a visitor because of the extreme cold weather clothing that is necessary which most people do not already have hanging in their closets.

thank you for responding so quickly. I grew up in michigan and spent the last winter working outdoors in alaska i am quite used to temperatures below -30 and am not woried by the cold. Whatever coat i choose will be worn with heavy layering of long underwear and wool. im more concerned with balancing the desire to pack light with also being able to fit in at least a little bit (I travel alot and americans are the only people i ever see wearing camping gear in large cities). I have heard russian people dress more formally than europeans or americans?

Yes. Russians are extremely fashion conscious. Certainly moreso in Moscow than Siberia....

Outside of the snow, Russia is nothing like Alaska or Michigan. Nothing. No commonality. That sort of outback/pioneer thing in north America does not translate in Russia.

Moving on, layering many types of clothing under a so-so coat is not a winning strategy in Russia. A long heavy coat is needed which you can throw on in an instant to barrier the outside bitter cold. Such a coat is an absolute necessity.

The train and in town buildings you will find extremely overheated. Positively sweltering. You'll be clawing at that woolen underwear.

Don't worry about having to pack the coat. You'll be wearing it.
