Hello!

I am working on a student project about tourism development in the Altai Republic. Does anyone out there have an opinion on what the area actually needs and whether the current situation -ie growth in adventure tourism, millions of dollars spent on Special Economic Zones for Tourism and the development of the Gorno Altaisk Airport - is good for the area or is there a risk for what makes the place so special - Its natural beauty and the fact that it's still quite inaccessible?

Any opinion welcome!

Also if anyone has been to Dagestan, I would really like to hear what you thought about it? Or if you know whether it is still not recommended to go at all, I would like to know!

Many thanks!

The biggest hurdle is perhaps the necessity to register in Gorno Altaisk

Road to the Mongolian border is good, and stunning.

Tourist infrastructure is lacking, though this is the appeal, camping in the regions INCREDIBLE landscapes!

Drove my own car through here two years ago (and Tuva / Khakassia).

If you need any more info, let me know

Hi!
When I was visiting in 2008 the Altai region (with a group) the most negative impression gave the poor facilities for sanitary purpose. We travelled on bus from Barnaul to Ust-Koksa 16 hours and it was disgusting not to find any decent toilet or place to wash the hands. For Western tourists a nightmare.
The road was in pathetic state, bridges almost tumbling down. So the state should invest first in these points.

But I hope the region will stay as pristine as it is. There is no need for roads in the mountains, hiking and horseback riding are big attractions.

But there is much competition in tourism the world over, and Russian Altai is of many places.
