Every time I travel to Russia, my beard comes with me
It seems to me that while the fashion is for men to go unshaven, beards are not so unusual as to attract attention ... as I am used to in the USA. |

A little bit of history. Peter the 1st passed a law that all Russian men had to shave. He did this because he was trying to build relations with Europe.
Almost all the men you see in Russia wearing beards are either Preists,Rabbis, or old men.
I was told by the people I went on my tour with that most Russian women did not like facial hair and I needed to shave. I did not and did not have any problems. But after things became serious...errrrrr......yeap.... I shaved! |

Most women hate facial hair and it doesn't matter if she is from Russia or not. |

| beard is wide spread among elderly people and popes. Many priests wear beards. It's common and no issue regarding that. |

Hello Friends..!!
Traveling in Russia with beard is normal as in other countries.Especially, most of the guys i have seen here have beard on their face.Everyone have made different style of beard....I also lived in Russia for 5 years and i also use to wear a beard. My girlfriend who is Russian ,really likes me in beard....So,there is no hard and fast rule which doesn't allow to have beard....
With regards,
Peter George.

I should add one thing. Some men look like Caucasians (= people from Caucasus) when they are wearing beard. If you look like this you will probably draw attention of the police.
My colleague is one of these men. When we arrive to an airport or to a rail-station the first thing he does is shaving in a toilet. Just in case. He says that when he doesn't shave he is constantly stopped by the police. |

Sadly, the experience of Ender's colleague is not unique. I would say that I have a "typical northern european appearance" with a light skin and brown hair (well, the part of my hair that isn't turning white). Adding together my visits, I have spent almost 4 months in Russia, and have never been stopped by a police officer there -- even though I have a beard.
But a man I know from a different forum who is of Mediterranean ancestry, with dark hair and skin darker than mine (I don't know, whether he has a beard), is stopped every day he spends in Russia by police who demand to see his identification papers. I assume this is because he looks enough like a person from the Caucasus.
It is part of the reality of Russia at this time, that Caucasian appearance draws police attention. |
