I am going to Western/Northern Caucasus as part of a group in august. How do I proceed? I heard there is a special permit for this area. Or not? Is that the responsibility of the tour company to get this special permit? Or do I also have to register somewhere? I understood there was from her info but could not quite figure out where and how. -уведомление о регистрации в ФМС (Федеральная Миграционная Служба) Quite specifically it is in Архыз/ Arkhyz. In republic Karachay-Cherkessia I think. Ulf

Hopefully, the tour company organizing the group will know about, and take care of any special paperwork you might need in this frontier region. In your situation, I would begin by asking the tour company. Registration is required by law whenever you spend three business days in one town. Usually this is not difficult, but you probably will need some local help. Again, if the tour company is doing their work properly, they will handle this.
