Hello all,

I have decided that for my next trip I would love to visit Yakutsk as a long term fascination with the city has boiled over. I have just got back from Volgograd, currently in Moscow and I am getting some shocked faces when I tell people about my next big plan. I'm here because I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me more about getting there.

I've seen rumours and pages floating around on the net about a railroad opening up to there in 2013. Is this really true, and does anyone know any specifics? For example could I take the Trans-Siberian from St. Petersburg to Yakutsk? On paper I don't want my plan to start until 2013 anyway, so it's all good.

Does anybody know how else I could reach Yakutsk via train/taxi in from a major Russian city WITHOUT flying? I hate flying as an experience and find it always ruins a trip. Would really appreciate some advice as I would like to begin working on this plan as soon as I get back to Kiev.

Thanks!

Russia is abundant in regions that can claim to be very big, very remote and very cold, but Yakutsk takes the (frozen) biscuit. It's extreme, even by Siberian standards.
