Hello all if you read my post in registration problem when staying with a friend you wanted me to post my russian army story.

Well here it is.

Well me and my girlfriend wanted to go to the Pushkin Art Musuem so we went there Jan 5th. But they were closed for children only so we starting to take pictures of the Museum on the outside. Then we started to walk away to go somewhere else we got to the corner of the street from the Museum and my girlfriend started to take pictures of some lights going up and down the street. She took one bad picture of the lights and i took the camera from her and took 2 more bad pictures of the street with lights. After i took the pictures i started to turn the camera off. As soon as i turned it off some Russian Army officer is running towards me. And he comes 2 inches away from me and starting saying some shit in russian. I had no idea what he was saying but i ask my girlfriend to translate for me. He said he wants us to follow him and she said to him what if we dont follow and he said then we will come after you because we have cameras all down this street.

So we followed the Russian Army guy across the street and we stop at this one building he rings the buzzer for someone to open up the gate. He takes inside this gate (we are still outside) and there are 5 armed Russian Soldiers saying we have to wait here until their supervisor comes. Me still not knowing what the hell is going on and i cant understand when they speak Russian so im scared shitless. After 20 minutes of waiting the Supervisor finally comes and ask for me and her passport. Then he started to walk away with our passports and my girlfriend said to him can we have our passports back and he kept on walking away and then she asked for them back again and he said to follow him.

Then he takes us in this little room which was about 6 feet tall, there was a desk and this huge book, there was a bed and a chair and electric heater. So im thinking i messed up somehow. He starts to ask my girlfriend about 50 questions in Russian about me and why am i here. He asked her if i can walk on my own? asked her what is my purpose being in Moscow? All this shit about me and her. And then he looks at my Migration Card, it was not registered yet and for nationallity i put down Italian because i was drunk on the plane i dont remember why. So then he starts asking all these questions about why did i put italian instead of American. So after about 30 mins with the supervisor he says we can go. He wrote down all the information about me, my girlfriend and our digital camera. And he did not notice that my Passport was not registered so i dunno. They let us out of the room and the gate and we were free to go. I was scared the whole time because i see 5 russian soldiers with guns and were inside this place for some reason.

Well my girlfriend told me we where there because on the otherside of those lights there was a secret Russian (FBI like building) it was called Federal Saftey something like FSI or FSU. Here they thought i was American Spy and anybody taking pictures of this building must go thro all that. It was quite interesting and stupid.

Good post cold war story, Joe, to tell to your grandchildren. I beg you had a feeling to be James Bond in 'From Russia with Love'. Man, you know how to tell a interesting story. I'm waiting for the next.

that's not amazing
you was foreigner (espescially american) taking photo of the building FSU (FSU was the KGB not very many years ago Wink ), maybe you wanted to detonate it or something Smile
So I don't see reasons to be surprised, that was very serious... Smile

Yeah, people blowing themselves up near Metro stations will cause that kind of suspicion. Police in the U.S. have been known to question and detain people they see taking photos of uptown/ downtown buildings. It is not just the FSB (FSU? FSS?) in Russia that keeps an eye on people. Police all over the world do that.
I imagine you wondered if the police were going to lock you up and throw away the key. Glad you made out ok and thanks for the story.

if i go to another country and i see them in camoflague and armed, im going to assume that they are russian army men. I felt like a spy once i was in there i was plotting a way to ecscape if they were going to take me somewhere without my girlfriend. I had it all planned out. I probally wouldnt of gotten far in real life but in my head i was making a run for it. I was just a foreigner taking pictures of lights Sad im not a spy Razz Hopefully the supervisor did not write anything bad down. I hope this wont effect me from getting a visa to visit moscow again. see my pictures at http://community.webshots.com/user/swp4lfe2005

ha! that's a very good story... i bet similar things happened to a lot of people. i don't think they were so impressed with you as a 'spy' that it will actually have any effect in the future. it must have been some standard questioning that looked more impressive because you weren't able to know what they said exactly...

they'd scare the shit out of me too for sure Razz
