What a great forum for travelers.

I'm going to be traveling to Russia in early/mid December.

I am also a male gymnast, and I would love to find a place where I could work out while in Russia, both to stay in shape and meet other athletes. I'm a bit older so any gym I could find would need to have an adult program.

I'm looking for artistic gymnastics (floor/rings/bar/horse...) rather than rhythmic gymnastics. But, if there is a good small gym I would look into that as well.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Спасибо!

I am heading to Moscow on Boxing Day and wondered how likely it would be to buy tickets for the Bolshoi? Does it get booked up ages in advance or is it possible to buy tickets when I get there? I would like to go and see Nutcracker??
With regard to my trip to Moscow, I am currently deciding upon where to stay although I will probably stay at a hostel.

On December I will also start studying Russian. I wish to learn up to intermediate level. It will be my first time in Russia.

Thanks for your help. My schedule will be very tight. But I am thinking mostly about visiting the Kremlin, the Red Square, the Orthodox church, the former KGB office and such historical sites related to USSR history, and also watch the parade. Someone has also told me about an interesting military museum. In the future I also hope to come back to watch the MAKS airshow.

With regard to other options, it all depends on how lucky I can be about finding pals.

Do you think it can be very complicated to come by the express train and subway from Sheremetvo to downtown Moscow?
I have talked with the staff of the Russian embassy and they also told me it's almost impossible to get such an invitation to watch the parade on the red square. It's a pity. Anyway I will be happy to mix with the people on Tverskaya street and watch the Topol-M carriers passing by.

	Hey, idezan!

That's not so strange. Imagine how many people would like to see the parade in action! Thousands. Everyone watches the parade on the TV. It's shown on almost every channel. Yes, there are several rehearsal days. Usually the last one is on the 8th. You can watch all the tanks and other machines on their way to Red Square (they come by Tverskaya street). The good thing is that they stay for a while on the street and you can see every single detail. You should also see the all planes pass. That's what we usually go to see with my friends.

Yes, there are three big hotels near the square: Inturist, International and Metropol. All three of them extremely expensive (smth like 400e a day).

During the parade and rehearsals Red Square is closed for visiting, but not before or after.

Yes, I am Russian and I do live in Moscow.
That's quite strange: it is the celebration of VE day and the people in general are not allowed to watch it? Is there some spot from which I could watch the parade anyway? How do Russian people make to watch it? Also, it seems there is the rehearsal day on May 8 or something like that. Perhaps I could watch the rehearsal instead?
Hi idezan!

Unfortunately, the military parade is only by invitation (you may get tickets if you know someone who works for the army). Even a local guide (by the way, it's rare in Moscow, not easy to get a good and cheap one) can't arrange that.

As for places to visit, you have not so much time in Moscow. You should do a walking city center tour. Try not to do all the museums, choose a single one (I recommend Tretiakov). The weather should be good as they make clouds go away for the parade.

Feel free to ask any questions.
I will be in Moscow next year, arriving on May 07 and leaving on May 10.

First of all, I wish to watch the military parade on May 09, on the best possible location, such as near the authorities. However, I have been told that getting a ticket can be hard. So, the question is: how to get this ticket? Is it possible to get beforehand? How? Perhaps it is better to arrange this with a local guide?

I also wish to visit interesting places around Moscow such as historical buildings and very important sites and also possibly a tour around Moscow. It would be great if I could do it with some friends. I will try to find some partners in the hostel I will be staying. Any tips?
