I am trying to order a group visa invitation letter for my wife and I for travel to Russia in 2010. But when selecting entry and exit dates, there is no option for 2010. Is this an error?

I am aware that I should not apply for my visa more than 90 days in advance, but I want to prepare early by getting the invitation letter.

I got my invitation papers yesterday via mail. Quick and cheap! Didn't bother getting the 1 day quick service. Had it in within less than half a day anyway.

I'm going to go to the consulate with all the papers on monday (I think).

As soon as I get to St. Peterburg I'm going to take the adventure on with my friend and just try and register the visa manually. We can always use one of the travel agencies to do it! It seems quite easy.

Like Romdur says, you can just let someone do it. They'll make copies and you can pick up the documents 2 days later (or something).

I've learnt a lot in my research.

It just seems easy at this stage....

- Get a health insurance declaration
- Buy a visa invitation (visa support documents, voucher)
- Go to the consulate with all the papers and photo's and stuff
- Register your visa at the OVIR or police OR let some office do it for a fee.

RE: Invitation letter to Brazil (staying at my friend's)

Don't worry too much, you have plenty of time.

I have read that it can take several weeks for a Russian citizen to make an official private letter of invitation.

The good news is that for not very much expense, you can get an invitation letter from a travel company (for example, through this website). If you do this, you will save your Russian friend some time and money, and get your invitation very quickly. But a specific company can often make invitations only for certain countries, so you must find a company that can issue invitations for Brazilians.

At some Russian consulates, a FAX of the letter is acceptable, but others require the actual letter -- ask your Russian Embassy about this! If they need the letter, you will have to pay for international mailing, and allow some extra days for this.

More good news: the invitation address doesn't have to match where you are staying. I suggest that on your visa application (you should apply for a tourist visa), where they ask what cities you will visit, write both Krasnodar, and the city given as the invitation address. That you will register your visa in a town different from the invitation address is no problem.

Finally, you can generally apply for a tourist visa up to 90 days before your trip, so you should be able to start your application right away.

Hello there...I'm an Italian citizen who loves visiting Russia...Recently I found a very useful website which provides invitation for visa very quickly and with a small price...the website is www.russian-visas.net
Have a look of it if you need an invitation to visit Russia

Ditto to all the above, just a little more detail:

In Russia, your visa (a full-page sticker permanently affixed to a visa page in your passport) serves as both an entry visa and exit visa. Because of this, losing a passport is a very difficult situation. I am careful with my passport when traveling.

The Migration Card (which you'll probably receive on the plane, but maybe need to pick up as you approach Passport Control at the airport) is a slip of paper. Things to fill in include your passport number, the visa number (near the upper right-hand corner of the visa), purpose of your visit (probably tourism for you) and the address where you will stay. Most of these items you will write twice, on both the left and right halves of the Card.

When you arrive, the Passport Control officer will tear off the left half of the Card, and return to you the right (departure) half, having stamped it. I always keep this in between the pages of my passport. It can be a big problem if you don't have it when you leave Russia.

All in all, it's fairly simple, with the hotel handling your registration. Just have your passport and the departure half of your migration card with you when you get to passport control on the way to your flight home, and all the formalities are taken care of.

For most tourists, there is no need to deal with customs forms - just go through the green (nothing to declare) channel when you pass through Customs, entering and leaving.

One practical note about passport control -- recently at Moscow airports, I have had a couple of hour plus waits getting through passport control. So I recommend making allowance for this, and especially to be plenty early arriving to the international airport or terminal for your flight back home.

My Fiances parents live in Moscow, its a fairly easy process, are you entering via Sheremetyevo?

If so just follow the signs down to the passport control, and give them the form polarbear and your passport with your visa showing after that you will see the baggage claim to the right and the exit to the left there are two exits the red and green, red is for people who have stuff to declare, the green for those who dont, after that you are in Russia.

I dont know if you speak Russian but if you do it will help, in Moscow very few airport workers speak english, many know lots of words, but cant really successfully communicate.

As far as safety just behave as in a larger city and take the same precautions

Good luck with your stay.

Invitation letter to Brazil (staying at my friend's)

Priviet! My name is Diego, I live in Brazil, and I want to visit a friend in Krasnodar, Russia, in January 2010.

I called the Russian embassy here in São Paulo many times to get the informations about the visa, but my biggest fear is the invitation letter. My friend is trying to make it at her city, but I'm afraid it's not going to work, and we have a too little time.

Can I buy it by this website, even if I'm staying at her house? Do I need any new document because of it? May I apply the visa one month before my trip?

I'm waiting for an answer!

Best regards,

In Sankt Peterburg, I usually use a visa service that provides the invitation, and has a business relationship with a travel agency in town. On the day after I arrive to Sankt Peterburg, I make a trip to the agency's office, where they make a copy of my passport (and I pay them the fee, if I didn't prepay in my home country), and they take care of my registration.

I found some more info.

when you order an invitation at www.expresstorussia.com you can order a basic one for 18 USD or one with registration in St. Peterburg for 55 USD.

I'm looking into the factual cost of registering yourself once in StP but that seems to be around ˆ30 USD as well. So why bother?

But how do they actually supply you the registration documents? I'll look into that.

I can't give you a conclusive answer. All I can conclude at this stage is that it doesn't seem to matter what's on your invitation when you want to register.

The invitation is merely a piece of paper you need to get the initial visa. As soon as you're in the country, you just need to tell the government where you'll be, registering your visa.

It's unclear to me where to do it though. In recent information I read there is no OVIR anymore and you need to go to the post office or the police station. But now this agent I spoke to says you have to see OVIR.

Confusing stuff.

I'm at the verge of ordering an invitation and getting down to the consulate. My plan, as it looks now, would be that I still need to find out what address to fill in on the invitation. The agent says "any" but it looks weird to have a home address on it? And then just go to the consulate or use a visa-by-mail service to get it.

As soon as I'll get to Russia my friend and I will work out where to register and just go there.

I read it's cheap.... anyone got info on that? I can order an invitation with visa registration as well but that's ˆ30 extra.

This quastion must have been given 10000 times but i cant find a finall answer. If someone could help me sort this it would make my day.

1)I will my self get a tourst visa but live with a friend and i have no clue what adress i should write on the migration form (the on you get when arriving in russia) that i stay on. If its my friends or a false hotel.

I mean i will have a tourst visa should i not state a hotel on the migration form? I think i will run in to problems if i state a private adress.....

2)Then i dont know if my friend can register someone with a tourst visa on his private adress.

If someone can help me with this ít will make my trip to russia much more conviniant.

For what it's worth, I just checked prices on round trips Istanbul to London, $298 in January by British Airways. But 2 weeks of lodging in England might be pretty expensive.

However you work this, best of luck!

Business visa, without business from UK

Hi guys,

I've wanted to travel to Russia for a long time and now I've undertaken a gap year I can fulfill this ambition.

I intend to travel for 3 months at around March next year, after some research it seems that a single entry 90 day business visa would be suitable.

It does state in a variety of places, including this site, that one doesn't have to be travelling on business to obtain a business visa. However, the London consulate (and the company that does it for them) says that a company letter is required. As does sites such as realrussia.com, after the application form has been completed.

Anyone know a way round this? Or have gained a business visa without a company letter?

This site mentions a "youth connections" visa (I am 1 in the troubleshooter, how does one go about getting this?

Thanks for you help guys

I got the following reply from the consulate in Antalya. It looks like you are right about not being on a tourist visa....

Quote:

The Consulate of General of the Russian Federation in Antalya may give visas to You provided You have a legal residence in Turkey.
of the Russian Federation in Antalya

What about if I were staying on a tourist visa in an EU country, would this be any easier or would I run into the same issue? I can't really afford to fly farther away just to fly back. I may be in Turkey until 31st of January or I may travel back to the US sooner. I'm not sure yet. Thanks for your help and will keep you posted on my decisions and the outcome.

It may depend on how you are "staying." I haven't found information specific to consulates in Turkey, but I have looked at Russian consular websites in several countries, stating that nationals of third countries can apply for a visa subject to one condition:

The applicant must document permission to reside in the third country, for more than 90 days. Sufficient documentation might be a long-term visa, work permit, residency card, etc.

There is at least one country (United Kingdom) where residents of SOME other countries (including US citizens) can apply for a Russian visa without such long-term status. I have seen reports about other countries where this is supposed to be true (one being Ukraine), but have not been able to confirm them.

So if you have long-term status in Turkey (legal residency, work permit, etc.), then you can probably get a Russian visa there. If you don't have long-term status, you might still inquire whether a 3rd country national can apply for a visa. Your experience of not getting answers by email is not unusual: I would mosey down to the consulate (5, Karyagdi Sok, Cankaya) and try asking in person - but to get help, it may be necessary to speak Russian, or to bring an interpreter along.

If neither of these avenues are open for you, then you can fly to the UK or US, and apply for the visa there. If you go the UK route, you may need to stay there 15+ days.

Ukraine is a bit closer - I have read an account from someone who got a Russian visa there several years ago, but I just don't know whether a US citizen on a tourist visit to Ukraine can presently apply for a visa.

If you learn anything, please post it here!

In Moscow it can be nearly instantaneous [have your 1 ruble/day fee ready!] or take half an hour if the registration person is on a break. In some outlying areas it can take a couple of days, but often your passport will be photocopied and given back to you right away.
_________________
Chris Marks

We went and visited my daughter's grandparents in the Murmansk region this past June and also had a great trip. We had to renew her Russian passport before we went. It had expired in April and I sent it and the application for a new passport to the consulate in early May. I was told it would take about a week and remember receiving everything as expected.

We were able to do the application in English, but I believe they must now be done in Russian and are a little more complicated, so allow time for translation etc. if you need this. The consulate also says that you should send the expired passport with the new application. I do not know if they will issue a new passport before the old one expires, so you might want to check on this before you send off your application.
Good luck,
_________________
Chris Marks

Hello All.

I am currently staying in Antalya, Turkey and wish to see my girl friend in Moscow during her holiday time. Do you think it is possible for me to get the visa while I am here, or must I return to the US to get it? I have contacted the consulate office in Ankara by email to ask this same question, but have not received a reply. Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Just got back taking our daughter back to Russia to visit her Grandparents in Kinishma. All in all a great trip !!!

Her Russian Passport Expires in December of 2010 (she she currently 15) the earliest we would go back to visit would be in the Fall of 2011.

Is is Ok to just let it expire, then start the renewal process as we get closer to going back ( assuming we will) or does it need to be renewed to avoid any unusal delays ??

Thanks

@aussiegirl:

I'm afraid that the travel you intend is probably infeasible, at least on the dates you have in mind.

To be clear - a visa from Russia (I believe this will also be true for the other countries you want to visit) is a full-page sticker permanently affixed to one of the visa pages of your passport. Part of the process of obtaining such a visa, is giving your passport to the Russian consulate in your country (in a minority of cases, you can also apply for a visa in a third country).

If you are in, or could make your way to, the United Kingdom, you could apply for a Russian visa - but you would have to stay there for up to 2 weeks, as the visa processing service would have your passport during that time. See http://ru.vfsglobal.co.uk/generalrequirements.aspx

In order to apply for a Russian visa, you need an official invitation, which you must pay for and would take at least one more day.

If you're not in a position to make your application in England, then as far as I know, you probably won't get a Russian visa in Europe (but possibly, there is another 3rd country - maybe Finland? - where you could try). And if you could get a Russian visa, you would still need to arrange visas for Mongolia and China in the few business days remaining, after your passport was returned to you - I don't know whether you would have enough time.

Unfortunately, it can be difficult, or even impossible, to get a Russian visa when you are not in your home country. And to visit 3 countries that require visas, it is probably best to begin preparations at least 2 months in advance - and to do so in your home country.

Wish I had better news for you!

My Aussie friend and I are currently travelling in Europe. We are very keen to get onto the Trans Siberian to Beijing. We are looking into organising visas for all 3 countries, Russia, Mongolia & China. But can we do it if we need our passports pretty much up until when we leave??

We would like to get the train from Moscow which departs 1st Dec, I've got 3 more countries I'm going to before I hit Russia. When applying for visas, do we always have to send them our original visa - or can we somehow send photocopies, then perhaps pick up our visas in Helsinki (where I'm meeting my friend)??

I'm in Athens at the moment, then I'm in Barcelona, London very briefly before hitting Helsinki to start the journey.

Everywhere I've read it looks like you have to send them your original visa, can I perhaps sort these out in any of the places I'm going to beforehand. If so, where and how long does it generally take.

Thank you for any assistance.

I got an email from Expresstorussia.com with some info I requested. I find it funny that it isn't the same as the info I found by myself.

Quote:

We can put any hotel or private address in the invitation where you will stay in Russia.
Russian law requires that travelers should register their visas if they are staying in Russia more than 3 business days. If travelers are staying in Russia more than 3 business days they should apply for the registration immediately upon arrival. Travelers who do not have their visas registered are required to pay fines when they attempt to exit Russia or if they are stopped by the police.
• If you are staying at a hotel, the hotel will register your visa.
• If you are staying at an apartment you will have to apply to a local migration department (OVIR) to have your visa registered.

Our company also provides registration service, you can order it in advance, to choose option – tourist invitation with registration and pay online for it or you can pay in our office when you arrive.
To register your visa you should come to our office upon your arrival to Saint-Petersburg, come to our office, we will make copies of your passport, migration card, Russian visa and get registration in 2 days.

Take the OVIR for example. My research taught me that there is no OVIR anymore and you need to register at the police or postal office.

My conclusion is that even when I apply for a tourist visa, I can still fill in a private address on the invitation application?

And once I get there, I need to register it somehow.

I'm waiting for this stupid piece of paper from my health insurer now. As soon as I have that I will apply for this invitation and then the visa.

I had someone tell me that it's highly advisable to use a visa bureau instead of going to the consulate myself, but I feel like doing it myself and not with an agent.

Anyone got any tips still?
